SWAP ONE: A HIGH-TO-LOW COMMUTE CAMPAIGN
CURRENTLY UNDERWAY
Swap One is an awareness-raising, action-focused initiative to encourage people in the Nelson Tasman region to swap one high-carbon commute each week for a low-carbon alternative. The project is funded by Nelson City Council and private donors.
Aim: To reduce carbon emissions generated by Nelson Tasman based commuters.
Approach: Running from July 2025 to June 2026, the programme offers drop-in clinics, a web portal, an app, leadership role-modelling and neighbourhood activations to educate and inspire behaviour change towards low-carbon commuting. Indicators of success – like carbon savings, bus, cycleway and road usage data, and fossil fuel consumption in the region – are tracked for encouragement and reporting.
Target: Participation from 1000 members of the Nelson community, with 30,000 trips converted from high carbon to low carbon transport.
Participants: Swap One is a collaboration between Mission Zero, the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum, and the Nelson Transport Strategy Group (“Nelsust”). It engages businesses, schools, and members of the public from across the region.
Status: Swap One is in the project planning phase, with launch identified for Sept 2025. GOLD/LASH is the Marketing Advisor to the Project Steering Group (incl. the Project Leader and two Activators).
